My Boyfriend is Two Inches Shorter And He Doesn't Like It

Okay I am dating this guy that I really love, but he is two inches shorter than me and he doesn't like it. And I am a heel person. Should I talk to him about the height difference? - Marley

Hi Marley,

Think about Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, they made a great couple when they were together. But truth be told, Tom was definitely not all that comfortable with his “short” height especially when Nicole would take to “heels”. Most guys do feel embarrassed when they end up looking short standing next to their girl.

You said your boyfriend does not like the fact that he is “shorter” than you; the fact that you are a “heels” person is only going to make him feel all the more conscious of the height difference. You can definitely help him out by compromising on your inclination towards heels. Wearing heels would easily add close to 3 inches to your height, making the height difference a bit too obvious and making your boyfriend feel awkward (even if he does not voice it).

Of course, your boyfriend needs to be cool about the height difference if he wants to enjoy the relationship. Be sure to assure him that you love him as he is and that you don’t feel awkward in any way being with a boyfriend who is shorter than you. If he ever feels that you are “embarrassed” about the height difference, he will definitely take it to heart. The “male ego” is a very tender thing and needs to be handled with care.

Here are a few tips on how to deal with the problem of height difference, when the guy is shorter than his girlfriend.

Get him to wear “thick” soled shoes – A think sole on a shoe can easily add 2 to 3 inches to a person’s height without making it obvious. Actors like Sylvester Stallone, are known to wear thick soled shoes to look taller. So many Hollywood heroes are as short as 5 feet 4 inches, and yet easily look to be 5 feet 8 inches (which is quite a normal male height) thanks to the shoes they wear.

Stoop a little when you stand together – A 2 inch height difference can easily be hidden if you just stoop a little, instead of standing rim straight. Many girls tend to do this subconsciously, when their boyfriend is slightly shorter than them or of the same height. It does not look obvious when you stoop slightly, just don’t over do it.

Wear your hair flat – A girl’s hair style can make her look a good 2 inches taller, especially when she “buffs” her hair up. If you wear your hair flat it won’t add to your height and thus help things with your boyfriend.

Laugh about it – Don’t make this into a serious issue. It’s best to deal with it in a light hearted manner. If your boyfriend gets to self conscious because of the height difference, just tickle him about it and let him know that it’s not a “big” deal. The important thing is that you love each other, nothing else does matter.
